The Fire Service College has opened its grounds to runners from across the country as it joins the nationwide movement, parkrun.
Launched in 2004, parkrun was started with the aim of creating a ‘healthier and happier planet’ by a developing a network of 5km running events which take place across the world each Saturday. Today, parkrun has amassed over 1400 locations in 22 different countries and has almost 2 million members.
During a typically blustery December, 212 runners took to our carefully planned route, which included a range of surfaces and showed off some sights of the College grounds.
Among the participants were many local running clubs and fitness groups underpinning the turnout that also included tourists who had travelled from as far as Essex, London, Chichester, Stockport and others areas in the UK.
Bryan Gregory, FSC Sports Centre Manager said, “We are immensely proud of the support that we have received during both the setting up parkrun at the College and also the day to day managing of the event by our fantastic volunteers.
“We have had a brilliant turn out from the local community, especially during this wet and dreary time of year, with over 212 people walking, jogging and running our 5km route. The event has been a great success so far and I am looking forward to seeing our parkrun grow in 2019 and beyond.”
As with all other parkrun’s, the College’s event will run each Saturday morning at 9am, starting next to the College Sports Centre. Each event is free to attend once runners have registered through the parkrun website, www.parkrun.org.uk.
